in His presence, being a blessing to the community

- LWMC Youth Camp 2005 @ Scripture Union Campsite, Sentosa

DAY 1 --> 1/6/2005, 5.30am...
RIIINNGGG!!! my phone alarm screamed at me to wake up. nah, back to sleep.... then came the human alarm - jason =p. ok. time to get up and get ready for camp! did some final packing then rushed to meet su yee who's joining us for the camp at the boarding school's office. 74 was kind to come early today so we managed to squeeze in time for breakfast at dover market before reporting in acsi where all campers are supposed to gather at 7 before leaving for sentosa. checked attendance for group3 - myself, stephanie, wei ren, mervyn, sherri, sasha, colin, rayner. so sad sabrina was sick and couldn't join us. my group's helpers were wayne and winston. yay! shall do my best to babysit these kids with steph(who's my co-leader) for the next 60 hours or so. during the bus ride to sentosa, i managed to share some of russell peters' , who is an indian-canadian talkshow comedian, jokes with hian liang. haha. we had such good laughter.

after an interesting journey, we finally reached our destination at 8.30am. got changed into 'thrashing' attire and gathered everyone for the ice-breaker games. first, we had to slip through a long rafia string through our bodies - the string enters from the right sleeve and exits at the left opening of our shorts. our group was the largest such that we took so long just to put the string through everyone, and we eventually started out as the last group in the race. "time waits for no man", and we really had to travel doubly fast to complete all 7 stations. more bad luck dawned upon the group when i picked randomly our starting location - tanjong beach. the journey there equals half the map! rayner injured his foot so we couldn't run, and the group kids were rather slack, only me n steph very 'onz' about the whole thing, trying hard to convert everyone to be as enthusiastic as us. colin was really an entertainment provider during the walk, saying loudly all his sec 1 nonsense. haha. very cute. very funny. i like. anyways, we took 15 minutes just to walk to tanjong beach. luckily we didn't get lost. the stationmaster there was paul. we had to go into the water to pick up pingpong balls in the sea using plastic spoons, then bury it in the sand using a spoon as well. worst of all, no hands - we are to hold the spoon with our mouth. sounded like fun to me. it was easy for most of us, and the game was a good start for the day, and the group as well. funny thing was everyone was wearing their shoes, except me, and sand has filled their shoes making it very uncomfortable to walk in. haha. we were really lucky after the game as a tram was just passing by as we were beginning to make our way to butterfly park to lok for wayne. surely a blessing and we had a short time of rest and getting to know each other better. tram went only as far as palawan beach, so we had to travel by foot again. took some shortcuts and we located wayne in no time =) . we were required to take out rubber bands from inside a short, rectangular container of green liquid of unknown identity, by using a toothpick held again by our lips. the green liquid really looked gross, but smelled like soda. ahhh, better don't take chances. evertone was surprisingly enthusiastic about the game, picking several rubber bands during their respective turns. some people cleaned up a little before moving on to our next station only to realise that they were about to get dirty again. we had to take the dragon trail to crispy's station. this station really confirmed ailene's intentions of 'revenge' towards me. haha. she had drawn inspiration from the O1 games we the 31st planned for her batch and used them on me! got ultra dirty at crispy's station. it's something like the body parts game, but this one included colours==paint, eg. 2 heads on yellow, 1 nose on white(flour), 2 ears on red...etc. luckily i wore the pinkified shirt i got from 32nd's initiation...mervyn noted that i've just added more 'memories' onto that one piece of t-shirt. next station was dean's @fort siloso. we were to put both hands on a string tied in a loop, then form the shape he desires but we were not allowed any verbal communication with each other. we completed this with minimal effort. yay! group 3 rocks! dean said the lesson from this game was that we must listen to others, and especially listen to God. stormed to the football field near our campsite next. aha! we've seen that place and mervyn knows a shortcut there.... took a bus which accelerated our movement. by then we were already a colourful bunch =p. neil's station requires listening too - everyone is blind-folded except the appointed representative who has to direct his groupmates to pick out coins from the ground. rayner was the 'chosen one', managed to get him to remember his groupmates' names.haha. i'm such a genius ;p 2 more stations to go, and everyone was high in spirits after all our successful attempts thus far. next station was at palawan beach. bingo! we spotted that station too earlier on en route to tanjong beach. station by paul .. we had to turn 7 rounds, dribble a ball, then bite out a piece from an apple placed in a bucket of water. i think this is the most challenging station already. once again, we were quick to attain victory. woohoo! sadly, there wasn't enough time to complete the last station by ping loong, so we had to return to campsite. phew! what an ice-breaker session we had. everyone's rather bonded now, and since we were early, we could all bathe first! yippee. i later found out that we were the only group to complete 6 stations, and the organisers also claimed that it's super tough to complete more than 5 stations. wow!

(haha, i just realised i wrote a super long entry about the games - you just gotta remember every bit of it! )

opening worship led by ian huang was next. followed by sermon by pastor barnabas. sermon about the camp theme. ___(to be updated soon)___we also watched a video about a person who experienced death and hell, but was resurrected using modern technology just minutes after being clinically dead. this peson shared his personal encounter with hell, and then heaven as he called on to Jesus. we had group discussion about what was preached after the sermon has ended. it was a new challenge for myself as i've never led something like bible study before. the discussion focused on how to enter the presence of God. thankfully there was stephanie and wayne who helped provide some deeper-thought responses to guide the younger ones to the objective of the discussion. i simply let everyone take a few minutes to ponder and prepare their responses to the discussion questions, then share them. i was very happy at the end of it as i could see everyone putting in their most honest responses, and some were eccentric and interesting responses too. finished on time, everyone's happy, then dinner time! i finished early to play the instruments that paul had brought to camp...we have an entire band set up here in sentosa - bass, a.guit, e.guit, keyboard, djembe + egg-shakers and tambourine. after dinner was preparation time for tomorrow's visit to gracehaven home. me n the YGone guys decided to make the bookmarks together, each copying a specific verse onto individual bookmarks and then decorating them, followed by lamination. there were 5 verses altogether, and i copied one of my favourite verse, of course:

" do not be anxious about anything but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" - Philippians 4:6

hopefully the kids at gracehaven will like them. the girls will be teaching the girls at gracehavent to make dragonflies using colourful strings and the other campers will be interacting with the kids by playing games.

after that, we had our very own CSI: Sentosa. haha. we were given a file each with 'top secret' information a.k.a clues to go about playing the game. me and steph decided we are just going to have some fun and not worry so much about winning, so we just went according to our instincts. we first found a clue behind the Qoo machine, then went to a room where we met Martee (Ping Loong) who was a bartender. we didn't know what to ask and therefore shown the door so that we do not waste other groups' time =( it was after that then we took more effort into understanding what's going on and getting to know the characters involved better. we went around asking clues. the entire investigation was to find out who was the murderer of Marco...his wife also having an affair with a third-party. we were quite successful later in the game, where we found more information from a 'witness' and the wife's boyfriend himself. we went to the bar again and was told to dance before the bartender will say anything to us. since everyone was stoning away and rather shy, i just went on to do some parts of our council dances! haha, that was really exciting to showcase what hwachong council can do. =) we were told to assemble in the hall again before we could finish interviewing all suspects. after a final QnA session, we worked on our plot..and in the end our guess was the most accurate! wow! i thought about how some information could just be lies, and also thought about he conventional poisoning and then framing another person to push the blame away from the actual murderer. and it worked! the bartender was the actual murderer, and the 'eyewitness' was actually covering up for him as they were good buddies. the bartender framed his wife's boyfriend as he knew of the tension between the dead man with his wife's new-found love. really cool plot! today had been a great day for group3...i continued making more bookmarks, jammed a while, then went to bed. tired.

my masterpiece...50% complete

DAY 2 -->
woke up at 5.30am just to do my quiet time; spend time with God. completed 2 sessions. decided not to have a group QT session as everyone was already very tired from yesterday - more sleep needed. rushed my breakfast, then practised for morning worship led by sarah. i was on bass. played a few new songs and didn't really play well as i was still unfamiliar with the bass. well, more experience needed and all these count towards it! sermon by pastor barnabas again. today's sermon was about ___ (to be updated)___ . just like yesterday, there was group discussion, this time about having peace in His presence. i shared about my thoughts of how God's first love for us leads to peace, and the joy as a consequence to peace.

Fruit of the spirit: Love, Joy, and Peace
First love because love is pre-eminent
Then joy because joy comes as a result of love
And then peace…which is a consequence of joy.

A preacher once said: “ Joy is peace with its hat thrown high in the air and peace is joy with arms folded in serene assurance.”

sadly, after discussion i had to rush to school for econs lesson, and thus unable to go to gracehaven home. =( was quite mad at first when i got to know that i wasn't informed about the change in time for our lesson. sigh. i feel like giving up sometimes.

pastor was kind to give me a lift to the campsite from church. chatted with him about my studies and also about the camp during the ride. it was just time for a 'buffet' dinner when we arrived. there was a short worship session, then followed by pastor kenneth's sermon. he spoke on how we can go about being a blessing to others. he explained our church's 'visual identity', and then shared with us something interesting about our church.. if we use spellcheck on the word LWMC, the first word to appear would be Lamb. lamb of god - LWMC. interesting, yet meaningful. we all split into groups again and had discussion about the trip to Gracehaven home. i didn't join the trip so i made it such that they are all telling me a story ( actually telling others at the same time). steph started the ball rolling. from everyone's response, i could tell that it was truly an eye-opener for them as the kids' behaviour was not as good as they had expected. they encountered,saw and heard a variety of responses from the kids there, generallly one that is not very welcoming. we ended off praying for the kids there, hopefully they will grow into responsible adults and hopefully they'll encounter God too.

we then had a time of worship led by paul. power-packed worship, and we tried an alternative version of the song 'I Will Worship'. really cool. we all stood in a circle and worshipped together. we then had a sharing session about the camp and also the trip to Gracehaven home. it was a touching and meaningful session, especially sharings about the trip to the home. there was this group of 4 christian boys at the home, and they shared with some of the campers how difficult it is to live in their situation. also, there was a kid who wanted to stay longer at the home because he felt homely there, not like the broken family where he came from. thank God we all have such loving families to live with. really pray that the kids there will grow up to be understanding and useful adults and also to get to know Him as their personal Lord and Saviour.

the session ended almost around midnight. now, we were given permission to use the canteen and the hall the entire night = no sleep tonight. i jammed on the bass and djembe and guitar for a while, then proceeded to write notes for people; mainly for yg2 and my camp group 3! searched my bible study material for key verses...i decided i'll dedicate a verse each for every member in my group. took me quite a while to complete all. when i ended at 2am, joined others in the hall to play this card game called "pig". aim of the game was to avoid being a 4th class pig, a.k.a chaota pig. the game is similar to heart attack; whoever gets a complete set of cards, he will do a specific action, then all the others playing must follow, the person doing it incorrectly will become a first class pig. haha. so cool! after some time we got exhausted and played bluff instead...found out who can be good liars. haha. time was 3am. went for walk around campsite with hian liang, then talked about the camp. really hope the younger ones can take home the important messages from camp and learn from it... i think some treated it more like a play camp than anything else. well, kids will be kids. we made certain interesting discoveries during our walk like there seems to be a community centre right smack in sentosa, and also we found 2 bomb shelters..it was really dark so we concluded we're too chicken to explore them. =p

4.30am: i really really wanted to sleep already. went to hall and bummed into steph, christine,isaac n evelyn. started talking again. at that time, steph had just completed writing notes to everyone in group 3 too. haha. i feel that i've pressured her into doing it because she's also a group leader. then when i wanted to sleep she felt like sleeping too. bingo! conclusion: i can easily pressure steph into doing anything, even waking up. we joked that i just have to stand next to her, when she's zonked out dead and asleep, simply to wake her up. super funny! super cute too.

4.50am: give me just 10 minutes of slumber. i arranged 3 chairs in a row, and dozed off on it in a mere 60 seconds. just as i was enjoying my sleep, isaac just have to ban me from sleep by constantly disturbing me. arrrggghh!!! ok. no. sleep. entertain. the. kids. i was super zombified by then. my brain had just disconnected itself from the rest of my body.

5.30am: alright, no sleep for the entire night. it's time for sunshine worship. steph was the worship leader, wayne's on guitar and me on egg-shakers ;) and all 3 of us didn't get any sleep. we went to the 'southern-most point of Singapore' to have our worship session. it was really cool crossing the bridge when it's still dark, then singing praises to Him till the sun rises in the east! awesome experience.
"from the rising of the sun
to the going down of the same
the Lord's name...is to be praised!"

"The natural pros" decided to forego the individual QT and just proceed to group QT as some of the group 3 people are new to QT. it was rather tough trying to perk people up, getting their attention making sure they don't fall asleep - everyone had minimal sleep and it was still very early in the morning. in the end, i'm still quite happy that they learnt more about how to go about doing QT and also get a grasp on the QT topic for that morning.

Next up: WAR GAMES!!! so sad that group 3 had to split because there was only supposed to be two teams. my warchief was neil. it's a capture the flag game and we 'kill' by pulling off the masking tape attached to everyone's back. the opposing team had a successful early attack but we eventually won. the enemies really camouflaged their flags well..you could hardly spot them from a distance! rough game, sometimes violent too (such as instances when su turned into a tigress and started 'attacking' me in defense of my attempts at stealth assasination) i had 5 kills throughout the game before i died naturally later on(my tape fell off because my back was too wet) oh yeah, prisoners of war get to play volleyball to decide who gets to be freed to re-join the game. after the game, stayed back for more beach volleyball before washing and packing up for break-camp. distributed the personal notes to all my group members, then took photos as usual. journey back to acsi was quiet, i was just dead already by then.

bad news: econs lessons right after camp ends. ahh...hardly paid any attention in the end anyway; too tired.

camp was super. group 3's the best!

"16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." - colossians 3:16-17
